The Meaning Of My Performance

At first I was going to perform on my own from Les Miserable but I didn't as it is a well-known song from a popular musical and I thought if people have heard this song before they will automatically know the story and that defeats the point in my performance. I decided to perform a song from a musical that isn’t popular and tell my own story through that incorporating the original intention. I performed ‘Say The Word’ from ‘The Unauthorised Autobiography of Samantha Brown’.

I decided to perform the dance before the singing because with singing the lyrics tell the story. And because the story is the same in both performances the audience would know what the dance was about after hearing the song tell the story. This is something I wanted to get across in my dissertation than through singing, the lyrics tell the story so most of the time it is easier to understand than dance.

I found it difficult to create a dance that expressed, explained the story and how the character was feeling. I can get emotions and feelings across, but what was difficult was finding a movement that explained what my character wanted to say. I feel words explain things a lot clearer than movement. I tried to create movements that were similar to the words to try and represent the words, I also tried to create the dance as a whole with a range of emotions throughout. And instead of representing each word with the action or movement I would perform a section that represented a lot of words.

These were the messages I was trying to communicate through the dance:

  • Why does he love me?

  • I’m not special enough that his love!

  • I am lost.

  • All I can think of is him.

  • Tell me you love me and I will stay.

  • It’s difficult to love you.

  • What is this feeling of love?

  • You made me love.

  • I want to enjoy love.

  • I’m ready for you to tell me you love me.

  • Just tell me you love me.

These messages I got from the lyrics but also what I wanted to communicate to the audience through the dance. These emotions and words I was trying to show through facial expressions and movement.

When it came to the song I felt I didn’t need to express or create as much movement or action because the lyrics told the story. Although I did use some facial expressions to communicate her emotions.
