Dissertation

I have researched into dance within musicals because I have a passion for both musicals and dance. My original idea for this dissertation was to compare dancing and singing within musical theatre and discover whether dance is overshadowed by singing. But after researching more into dance based musicals it became about how an audience views dance within Musical Theatre. I wanted to look into musical theatre choreographers thoughts on the importance of dance. I have shown interviews with established practitioners of Musical Theatre and their thoughts on dance within Musical Theatre currently.  I will be discussing dance based musicals to show that some musicals can tell story’s through dance. I will be delving into audience perception, how the audience receives the story told within a musical, how an audience sees dance within a musical and the importance of intertextuality within a performance. For my dissertation I performed a dance and song piece to let the audience compare and view the story in two different ways. I have feedback from the audience on this to show their perspective. I feel like my dissertation title has not been looked into. Therefore I can hopefully discover something original or unique and figure out how the audience perceives dance within Musical Theatre.
