Movin' Out

Movin' Out is a dance based musical, the dialogue is minimal. The story/musical is told through dance with music in the background. The orchestra plays the music and sings the songs of Billy Joel. The characters facial expressions help tell the story throughout the musical. It is acting through dance. There are also some comedy elements portrayed.

The different dance styles in this musical tell stories for instance there is a pes de deux when one character is proposing to another and expressing their love for each other. When there is fighting or an argument in a scene it is shown through stronger more powerful movement.

Also different songs/ styles of songs tells a new chapter in the story. For example when a passionate scene is occurring the music may be softer but when a powerful war scene or action is going on the music will be more disturbed and louder.

The lighting helps set the scene/ mood. This helps communicate the story to the audience as to where they are space wise and what is going on in the story. There was a little bit of scenery to set the scene which helped communicate where the characters where and what they were doing.

This musical makes me think that a show would have to be told fully through dance like this musical or fully through song and acting like most other musicals. When telling stories through dance in sung through musicals it would confuse the story as the audience could interpret the dance in a different way and that might change the story from what the rest of the musical is telling.

I feel like in this generation this style of musical wouldn’t be as popular as regular musicals because this era is very music based. When watching this musical I felt like I had to concentrate loads to understand the story where as in a normal musical the story is told to you this is why these musicals are more popular this generation is lazy.
