Some Like It Hip Hop

This is my anotated version of this article.

This article written by Sanjoy Roy is about a musical called ‘Some Like it Hip Hop’. This isn’t a typical musical, as it tells the story through, and mainly focuses on, dance rather than singing which I think is unlike most musicals. The dance in this musical is mainly hip hop/ street dance, and the songs are mostly R&B. This is a style of song and dance you don’t often see in musicals, which sets it apart from others and I think it will take musical theatre in a new direction.

Kate Prince is the choreographer-director for this production, with this being a dance based musical I feel she has to work more as a choreographer than a director, although she might just work as a director that focuses on dance more. Kate Prince has put on other productions similar to this showing she is passionate about dance and this style of dance within musicals.

I feel it’s good to have a range of dance styles within musicals because it isn’t seen a lot these days and it makes it current and also different. I feel this musical isn’t well known because it mainly focuses on dance instead of acting or singing. I feel only people with a passion for dance would want to watch this musical, whereas most general audiences would be interested in sung-through musicals and storybook musicals; it just depends on the audience member as to what they prefer.

He wrote about how dance isn’t used as much as it could be in musicals which I agree with. He wrote about how he thinks dance is used as background entertainment instead of being used to tell the story which I feel is done lots within current musicals, I feel this could easily be changed.

This musical shows that a musical and a story can be told through dance instead of singing, and this is a point I want to prove through my dissertation and is what I want to show through my performance. This article has proved that dance can tell a story instead of just being entertainment.
